Italy Accelerates Its Quantum Economy Strategy

Italy is taking concrete steps to position itself in the emerging quantum economy, as highlighted during the Stati Generali Quantum – Implementation of the National Strategy for Quantum Technologies, held in Rome on 17 December 2025. The high-level working session brought together government representatives, academia, industry leaders, startups, and investors with a shared goal: turning quantum excellence into market-ready innovation.

A central outcome of the event was greater clarity around the implementation of Italy’s national quantum strategy. Rather than broad ambitions, the focus has shifted to practical priorities, including talent development, research pipelines, technology transfer, and pathways to commercialization.

Discussions strongly emphasized the need to move quantum technologies out of research labs and into deployable products, pilot projects, and critical infrastructure. This shift is particularly relevant for startups and scale-ups developing real-world solutions and seeking faster routes to industrial adoption.

Participants also highlighted cross-sector opportunities where quantum technologies show clear market pull, including cybersecurity, computing, sensing, telecommunications, supply chains, and national security. Across all sessions, collaboration emerged as a key theme, with public–private partnerships, coordinated investment, and European alignment seen as essential for global competitiveness.

For startups and industrial innovators, the message was clear: new funding opportunities, improved access to R&D networks, growing demand for pilot projects, and more predictable policy support are coming into place. Italy, and Europe more broadly, are signaling that quantum is no longer just a research endeavor, but a strategic industrial priority with space for ambitious builders.
